5 Actors Who Are Struggling for Work

It’s always sad to see prominent actors and actresses out of work. One mistake can essentially determine the rest of your career. Sometimes it’s just a case of whether the actor is relevant anymore. Sure actors can keep their careers going by releasing budget straight to DVD films but we're talking a-list actors who are just not in the spotlight anymore. Just keep in mind however that when we’re saying nobody wants to work with these actors doesn’t mean that won’t change in the future. Just look at Michael Keaton. He was pretty much out of the spotlight for around 10 years before once again getting more prominent roles such as his academy award nominated performance in the hit film Birdman. Things can easily change. However, for now here’s 10 actors who are Struggling to find work
5. Brendan Fraser.

Now this is one actor you can’t help but feel sorry for. Brendan Fraser was essential built up to be the biggest thing in the world thanks to his roles in films such as George of the Jungle and the Mummy Trilogy. You’re probably asking yourself “What’s the reason for him being out of work?” Well it’s for a number of reasons. First reason simply being that the mummy franchise dragged on for far too long. Sure there were only 3 films in the rebooted series (Minus all of the dreadful scorpion king films) and sure they weren’t really great for their stories but are more fondly remembered for their action set pieces and well known this cgi abomination of The Rock but the amount of time it took to make the third film, Tomb of the Dragon Emperor certainly wasn’t worth the wait. It was at this point that everyone knew the franchise wasn’t going to evolve. The formula was too dated at this point. Now add this to the fact that other film projects Fraser was involved in were either lackluster or just plain flopped at the box office and you have the reason why he’s out of work. It’s a shame because he is a legitimately good actor. Hopefully his career can see some sort of a resurgence in the near future.
4. Adrian Brody.

Now fair enough you can argue that he has had constant work, However let me ask you, What films do you remember Brody being in from the last 5 years? Fair enough he did have a role in the award nominated Grand Budapest Hotel, However he’s mainly been casted in budget films. You know, those cheap films you see in your local supermarket. Besides The Grand Budapest Hotel which was released in 2014, The last major film he’s been in was Midnight in Paris back in 2011 and even then he was sandwiched between higher ranking actors such as Woody Allen, Owen Wilson and Rachel McAdams. So if we go further back the last film he had a major ROLE in, That would be Predators back in 2010. The film itself wasn't bad, In fact we would go as far as to say it’s a competent sequel to the original 2 films, However Brody’s acting in the film was pretty forgettable. Not terrible but when you have Laurence Fishburne's character, a Member of the Yakuza and Danny Trejo just being Danny Trejo, Odds are you’re going to forget about Brody altogether.
3. Charlie Sheen.

Oh boy where do we start. So it’s safe to say that most people love charlie sheen for his role in 2 and a half men. Other people simply love him for his infamous meltdown back in 2011. Now while that meltdown was hilarious for some of the quote's sheen spurted out such as “I’m on a drug and it’s called Charlie Sheen” and that he has Tiger Blood, You have to admit that this pretty much halted his career dead in its tracks. Not only did he get booted off of Two and a Half Men but he has since struggled to grab any sustainable work since then. Sure he had the odd film with Machete Kills in 2013 being the last film he starred in, but even his short lived TV series “Anger Management” wasn’t able to dig him out of that downward slump his career was taking. What makes it worse is that it’s only now starting to take it’s toll on his personal life as he has been reported to have been having money troubles.
2. Macaulay Culkin.

Pretty much the fate of all child stars. They have their 15 minutes of fame before growing up and fading into obscurity. Unfortunately this is exactly what happened to poor MacaulayCulkinn. Getting his first big break at the age of 8 in the 1988 film “Rocket Gibraltar”,Culkinn would go on to make some of the most memorable films such as Uncle Buck, Home Alone 1 and Home Alone 2 And that’s pretty much it. The rest kind of suck. No offense. It was at the time he acted in the film “The Pagemaster” that people started to seeCulkinn’s box office performance drop as the film made a mere 12 million at the box office which is less than half of the film 27 million dollar budget. The final nail in the coffin forCulkinn came in 1994 as he starred in the film “Richie Rich”. The film itself was very bland and boring andCulkinn’s performance didn’t favor well with critics as he was nominated for a Razzie Award for Worst Actor (Which he was also nominated for another 2 times in the same category of the same year for his performances in the previously mentioned film “ThePagemasterr” and “Getting Even With dad”).Culkinn’s career hasn’t really recovered since and has instead shifted his focus from the film industry to the music industry.

1. Nicolas cage.

For the record right now We love Nicolas cage. The guy is just insane! I mean even in roles he’s supposed to take seriously, He ends up chewing the scenery by putting on some of the craziest performances you could imagine. Just look at Ghost Rider. Terrible film but the best part of that film is just watching Nicolas cage BE Nicholas Cage. Or how about the Wicker Man Remake? Again it’s a terrible film but you can’t deny that Cage’s performance in the film wasn’t memorable. But in all seriousness, You could say that it’s because of these crazy performances that he’s not seen any sustainable work since Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. Sure he’s had roles in direct to DVD films and he was able to bag a minor role in the upcoming film Snowden, but he hasn’t had a major blockbuster film in which he played a large role in since 2012. And again, it’s a shame because Cage can act when he wants to! Look at his performance in Kick-Ass. Sure the film is an comedic superhero film but Cage played the role of Big Daddy really well. Sure he turned full “Cage” mode when it came to the scene where he was set on fire but it worked. It’s such a shame that cage has now been relegated to only performing in Straight to DVD releases but hopefully he can make a return to the big screen in a major role. Even if he decides to go full blown crazy or not.

8. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Arnold Schwarzenegger is legitimately awesome. His early adult life is literally the definition of capturing the american dream! When Arnold came to America from Austria back in 1968 at the age of 21, Arnold had nothing to sustain him until he could begin his career as a bodybuilder. Until then however, He and his close friend and fellow bodybuilder, Franco Columbu started up a bricklaying business to tide them over until they could kickstart their careers. At this time, Arnold spoke very little english and learned more and more with each client that hired himself and Franco. Eventually Arnold would train at the now famous “Gold’s Gym” in Venice Beach, California before entering his first Bodybuilding competition. The rest from here on out is history.

7. Eminem.

Eminem is probably one of the hardest working rappers in the industry. Marshall Mathers had to work hard to get to where he is now. Before his rise to fame, he grew up moving back and forth between Missouri and Michigan with his single mom. Eventually, He and his mother settled on staying in Detroit, Michigan, living in a lower-middle class neighborhood. Even though they finally had a steady home to live in, things weren’t that great for Marshall. He constantly got bullied at school which was more physical bullying than typical verbal bullying as he got a concussion because of it. While his mom sued the school because of the incident, the case was eventually dropped. Eventually when rising to success after being recruited by several rap groups and then eventually going on to have an outstanding solo career, Marshall would channel his history into his music, writing about the bullying incident in his song, “Brain Damage.” Considering he went from a lower class neighbourhood to receiving over 150 awards over the course of his career (including an Oscar for his performance in the film “8 Mile”) he’s done pretty well for himself.

6. j.k. rowling.

Writers who are trying to make it in the industry, Don’t give up because even the greatest of writers had to start somewhere with the careers, and j.k. rowling is a prime example of a writer who clawed their way to fame. Writing her first book at the age of 6, Rowling knew she was destined to be a book author. With encouragement from her mother, She continued this journey all the way through her early adult life. After her mother’s death, Rowling moved to Porto, Portugal to teach English as a foreign language. During this time, she met Portuguese Television Journalist, Jorge arantes who she would go on to marry. Unfortunately this marriage didn’t last and Rowling moved back to England with her then infant daughter 1993. During this time, Rowling was living in cramped conditions which is no place for a child to stay while living on Welfare Benefits. During this time however, She had the original draft of the Philosopher’s Stone (Or the sorcerer's stone in the U.S) written up. By the time 1995 came around, Rowling was able to catch a break with publisher Bloomsbury which would finally lead to her financial success in the following years. This just shows that hard work pays off.

So even with a great sense of humor, it automatically mean comedians had the best of lives. Jim Carrey had to witness his family go through tough times to make ends meet at the age of 11 after his 51 year old dad lost his job. Because of this, The whole family, Including JimCarreyy had to take on jobs like Janitors and night guards.Carreyy had to take up a job after school where he would work 8 hours a day in a factory. It was so draining thatCarreyy stated that he wanted to “Bash somebody’s head in”. It was so bad that the family ended up living in a van for a while.

4. Mark Wahlberg.

Mark Wahlberg pretty much has everything a person could want in life right now, but before rising to success, Wahlberg had quite the shady past. Wahlberg didn’t graduate from high school, and he drifted into a life of crime. These crimes would include harassment, assault and possession of cocaine. It was pretty safe to say that he hit rock bottom before the age of 20,Wahlbergg pretty much hit rock bottom and pretty much had nothing. What makes this story remarkable however is the transformation he made from his shady past into the celebrity that he is today. Starting out as a rapper Marky Mark, he eventually broke out into the film industry appearing in modern classics such as The Departed and The Fighter. He’s came a long way from his sketchy past, that’s for sure.

3. Jay-Z.

Jay-Z’s childhood was without a doubt a rough one. A majority of his childhood was spent in the housing projects of Brooklyn, New York. In his autobiography, Decoded, he writes about his time after his childhood, “My life after childhood has two main stories: the story of the hustler and the story of the rapper, and the two overlap as much as they diverge. I was on the streets for more than half of my life from the time I was thirteen years old …The feelings I had during that part of my life were burned into me like a brand. It was life during wartime.” Jay-Z is now one of the current pioneers of the rap genre as he currently holds well over 48 awards throughout his well decorated career.

Tom Cruise didn’t have an easy upbringing. Not only did he have to deal with his family living in poverty, He also had to live with his father who was an abusive bully. In several interviews, Cruise would state that his father “was the kind of person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you. It was a great lesson in my life—how he’d lull you in, make you feel safe and then, bang! For me, it was like, ‘There’s something wrong with this guy. Don’t trust him. Be careful around him.” Thankfully, his mother had enough of the father and left him when Tom was in middle school. Perhaps that change helped him out not only as a teenager, but later in life as well. He has since won nearly 30 awards, including three Golden Globes.

One of the most recognisable actors in the world, Leonardo DiCaprio is without a doubt one of the most popular A-list actors, Golden Globe-winners and finally an Oscar winners in the world right now! Despite his immense success, he didn’t exactly have the greatest of beginnings. He was raised in Los Angeles, California by his German mother. While she often worked two jobs to support her and her son, it was still a rough road. In an interview, DiCaprio states that in the neighbourhood his childhood home resided, “[There was a] major prostitution ring on my street corner, crime and violence everywhere. It really was like Taxi Driver in a lot of ways.” Much like other people on this list, He is living proof that you can make it in the industry even if you’re living in poverty.
